Backyard Greenhouse Gardening - Tools And Materials To Keep On Hand

If you are thinking about using one of the many portable backyard greenhouses, you should also consider the tools and materials you might need. Although some tools may not be very expensive they could make a lot of difference in how much you enjoy greenhouse gardening.

Greenhouse gardening is a great solution for gardeners with a small space or those that live in a colder region. A greenhouse gives your new plants a much longer growing season and grow control systems, allowing you to get the most from your fruits, vegetables or flowers.

1. The tools will be small but necessary. You should be able to use small shovels and rakes for gardening from your local dollar store. Use old paint brushes for dusting soil off tables and rims of pots.

2. Keep extra potting soil on hand for transplanting, accidents or topping off soil that has become compacted.

3. Recycle pots as you transplant and keep a few extra ones in different sizes.

4. Keep clean water in a recycled milk container for quick watering and rinsing.

5. If you are using a fertilizer that needs to be mixed with water keep some premixed on hand in a recycled milk container.

6. Keep a small supply of foam cups, or small recycled yogurt containers for starting seeds and transplanting seedlings.

7. Plastic gloves and gardening gloves will both come in handy when working with your plants.

8. You will need a small supply of rocks for the bottom of your pots to ensure good drainage.

9. Recycled metal coat hangers make a good trellis for small climbing plants and supporting larger ones.

10. Avoid using pesticides by planting herbs for insect control.

There are a lot of advantages to using backyard greenhouses and being cost effective is only one of them. The cost of buying a greenhouse kit is minimal when compared to the savings and health benefits you will enjoy from growing your own fruits and vegetables.

Greenhouse kits are available in a variety of sizes and styles and many of them are very easy to put together. You will most likely put yours together the same way you would put up a camping tent or artificial Christmas tree. The frame will probably be light aluminum poles that fit together and may or may not be marked. There will be anchor pegs and a waterproof cover. You can have a backyard greenhouse put together and ready to use in as little as an hour.

Some greenhouse kits will include a storage bag but if yours is not you need to get one. If your parts are not marked, you need to mark them. Keep the instructions and send in the registration or go online to do it. Keep the instructions and take a picture after you have finished putting it up. Storing your greenhouse for the winter will help you get even more from it by keeping it in good condition. Most winters are cold and will quickly ruin the plastic cover and parts.
